Ramiz Zerrouki’s early promise at Feyenoord has been overshadowed by recent struggles, with his former youth coach Theo ten Caat pointing to a key personality trait that could be hindering the Algerian midfielder’s progress.
Confidence or Stubbornness?
In an interview with Voetbal International, Ten Caat, who coached Zerrouki at FC Twente, described him as both an exceptional talent and a difficult player to manage.
“He’s one of the best young players I’ve ever coached, but maybe also the biggest pain in the neck,” Ten Caat admitted.
“I’ve always had a good relationship with Ramiz, but sometimes he drove me crazy. He’s so sure of himself. But sometimes you have to have doubts. Doubt makes you think.”
According to Ten Caat, this strong self-belief, while valuable, could also be limiting Zerrouki’s ability to adapt and grow.
With the Algerian international currently facing a tough period at Feyenoord, his former coach suggested that learning to question himself more could be key to overcoming his challenges.
A New Opportunity Under Fresh Leadership
Despite Zerrouki’s difficulties, Ten Caat remains optimistic about his future at the club, particularly with the arrival of new coaching staff.
He highlighted the influence of René Hake, likening him to Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag in terms of coaching philosophy.
“He will now work with René Hake, who, in my opinion, is a coach in the same vein as Erik ten Hag,” Ten Caat explained.
“As for Robin van Persie, he has a more romantic vision of football. He likes a fluid and attacking style of play. I think Ramiz can build a good relationship with Van Persie and benefit from it.”
With Feyenoord undergoing changes, this could be a pivotal moment for Zerrouki. If he can adjust his approach and learn from the club’s new coaching staff, he may yet carve out a lasting role for himself in the team.
Time will tell whether the Algerian midfielder can turn this challenging period into a stepping stone for future success.
