Algeria’s possible paths at the 2026 World Cup: From dream group to nightmare draw
The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on 5 December 2025 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, where Algeria will finally discover its group-stage fate.
With an expanded format and an unprecedented number of teams, the tournament promises both opportunity and danger for the Greens.
The 2026 edition will be the largest in history, co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico — three vast nations covering an area nearly two-thirds the size of Africa.
For the first time, 48 countries will compete, divided into twelve groups of four.
The top two in each group and the eight best third-placed sides will progress to the round of 32, introducing a new layer of unpredictability.
According to the competition’s structure, teams will be distributed into four pots of twelve.
Pot 1 will include the three host nations and the nine best-ranked qualified teams.
Pots 2 and 3 will feature the remaining directly qualified teams, ordered by their FIFA ranking, while Pot 4 will contain the lowest-ranked sides and those who qualify through the play-offs.
Algeria in pot 3
Based on current projections, Algeria is expected to be placed in Pot 3.
Analysts, including those at X Football Rankings, suggest that given the Fennecs’ FIFA ranking and the results leading up to December, the team is unlikely to rise to Pot 2 or fall to Pot 4.
This position means they will inevitably face at least two teams ranked above them.
That could result in dramatically contrasting outcomes — either a manageable group or one of the most difficult in the draw.
Potential group of death
In the worst-case scenario, Algeria could find themselves grouped with South American and European giants.
If Argentina were drawn from Pot 1, and Germany and Italy from Pots 2 and 4 respectively, it would form a true “group of death.”
Such a combination would pit the Fennecs against three former world champions — a challenge that would test even the strongest Algerian generation.
Best-case scenario
On the other hand, a far more favourable path could see Algeria drawn alongside one of the host nations, considered among the weaker seeds.
Facing Canada, Iran from Pot 2, and New Zealand from Pot 4 would give Djamel Belmadi’s men an excellent chance to advance.
Each of these potential opponents sits within Algeria’s competitive reach, particularly given the strong Algerian diaspora across Canada, which could provide crucial support in the stands.
With less than two months until the draw, anticipation is building.
For Algeria, the 2026 World Cup represents both a challenge and an opportunity — one that could define a generation of Fennecs depending on how the cards fall in Washington.
