Olympique de Marseille are exploring a move for Algeria international Ismaël Bennacer as part of a broader strategy to strengthen their midfield, with manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly keen on bringing the AC Milan player to the Stade Vélodrome.

Bennacer, who has been linked with a potential departure from Milan this summer, is seen as a high-value addition for Marseille, provided he can return to full fitness.

The Algerian midfielder, known for his composure on the ball and defensive qualities, has endured an injury-hit spell in recent seasons but remains one of Serie A’s most technically gifted players.

De Zerbi, who took charge of Marseille earlier this year, is believed to hold Bennacer in particularly high regard and views him as a potential cornerstone of his tactical project.

The Italian coach has been vocal about his admiration for Bennacer’s playing style, suggesting that the 26-year-old could provide the balance and control Marseille’s midfield has lacked.

The Ligue 1 side are not limiting their search to Bennacer, however, as they continue to evaluate alternative reinforcements.

Mateo Kovačić of Manchester City has been mentioned as another possible target, but City are unlikely to sanction his departure given his role in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Kovačić’s experience and versatility would make him an appealing option for De Zerbi, yet negotiations for the Croatian international would likely be difficult.

Another name under consideration is Barcelona midfielder Marc Casadó. The 21-year-old academy product has yet to secure a regular place in the senior team and could be made available as the Catalan club seeks to balance its finances and register new signings.

Casadó’s development at La Masia has been highly rated, and a move to Marseille could offer him more consistent playing time at the highest level.

The recruitment drive reflects Marseille’s ambition to rebuild their squad under De Zerbi, who is eager to implement a dynamic, possession-based style of football.

Strengthening the midfield is a priority for the Italian manager, and Bennacer has emerged as a prime candidate due to his intelligence, versatility, and ability to dictate play from deep.

Bennacer’s future at Milan has been the subject of speculation for months. Despite being a key figure when fit, his injury setbacks have led to uncertainty over his long-term role in Stefano Pioli’s squad.

A move to Ligue 1 could offer the Algerian a fresh start, particularly under a manager known for developing technically proficient midfielders.

Marseille’s interest in multiple targets highlights their determination to bolster the squad ahead of a demanding season, both domestically and in Europe.

While Kovačić’s availability remains doubtful, Casadó’s situation at Barcelona appears more fluid, potentially offering Marseille an opening.

Bennacer, however, is the player De Zerbi is believed to be pushing hardest for, viewing him as an ideal fit for his tactical philosophy.

Discussions are expected to continue in the coming weeks, with Marseille eager to finalise reinforcements before the close of the transfer window. For Bennacer, the prospect of working under De Zerbi could be a decisive factor as he weighs his future.
