Algerian forward Nadhir Benbouali remains determined to earn his place in the national team, despite not being among the top contenders for a call-up.
The 24-year-old, who was briefly included in the squad in June 2022 but did not feature in any matches, continues to aspire for a return under head coach Vladimir Petković.
Currently on loan at Hungarian club Budapest Honvéd following a challenging stint at Charleroi in Belgium, Benbouali remains hopeful that his performances at club level will attract the attention of Algeria’s coaching staff.
With a competitive forward line that includes Islam Slimani, Mohamed Amoura, and Andy Delort, the task ahead is formidable, but the former Paradou AC striker is undeterred.
Determined to Earn His Spot
Speaking about his ambitions, Benbouali acknowledged the challenge but remained optimistic:
“Playing for the national team is the dream of any ambitious footballer. I understand that the road is long, and I need to work hard and score consistently to prove myself. It’s up to me to show the coach that I deserve my chance.”
The forward is well aware of the difficulties in securing a place in Algeria’s attack, which also features stars like Riyad Mahrez, Amine Gouiri, and established veterans. However, he remains focused on his performances, believing that consistency at club level will be the key to breaking into the squad.
Keeping the Dream Alive
Despite the stiff competition, Benbouali remains hopeful. He has noted that Vladimir Petković has shown a willingness to bring in unexpected players when their performances merit selection.
This gives the Honvéd striker confidence that he still has a chance to wear the national jersey again.
“I can only control my performances. If I score and perform well with my club, the coach will have to take notice. It’s up to me to seize every opportunity,” he added.
While a call-up for Algeria’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Mozambique on March 21 and 25 appears unlikely, Benbouali refuses to be discouraged.
At 24, he still has time to prove himself and force his way into the squad in the future.
With Algeria boasting two Africa Cup of Nations titles (1990, 2019), competition for places remains intense. However, Benbouali’s perseverance mirrors the journey of several players who took unconventional routes before cementing their status in the Fennecs squad.
Whether his persistence will pay off remains to be seen, but his determination to represent Algeria is unquestionable.
