Riyad Mahrez has set his sights on one last triumph with Algeria, declaring his ambition to lift another continental title before bringing an end to his storied international career.
Just days after leading Al-Ahli to Asian Champions League success, the 34-year-old winger underlined his commitment to the national team, vowing to complete what he called “unfinished business” with the Fennecs.
The victory with Al-Ahli added another chapter to Mahrez’s glittering career, making him one of the few players in football history to claim major trophies on three continents: the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 with Algeria, the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City in 2023, and now continental silverware in Asia.
Speaking after the match, Mahrez reflected on the journey that brought him to this latest milestone. “We are happy with this victory. Major competitions push us to give our best.
Since my arrival at Al-Ahli, my objective was clear: to bring the club back to the top. Today, it is accomplished with this prestigious title,” he said.
The Algerian captain played a leading role in Al-Ahli’s continental campaign, registering nine goals and eight assists in just 13 matches.
His standout performances drew praise from across the footballing world, even winning over former critics such as Egyptian legend Mido, who had previously questioned his decision to move to Saudi Arabia.
But while the club success has been satisfying, Mahrez made it clear that his heart remains with the national team. “I have a job to finish with Algeria,” he declared.
“I want to win another title with the national team, because what I feel in this jersey is beyond words.”
Mahrez’s words set the stage for what could be a defining campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Algeria, who lifted the trophy six years ago under his captaincy, have since endured back-to-back group-stage exits, a decline that Mahrez is eager to reverse.
The next edition of the tournament offers both a shot at redemption and a possible swan song for the player who has been the face of Algerian football for nearly a decade.
With 97 international caps and 31 goals to his name, Mahrez’s influence on the national team remains as significant as ever.
He has carried the team through numerous qualifying campaigns and high-pressure moments, and his experience will be invaluable as Algeria prepares for a tournament that promises both fierce competition and historic rivalry, including a potential showdown with hosts Morocco.
The 2025 edition, scheduled to begin in December, could be Mahrez’s final major outing in national colours.
But for now, the veteran winger is focused on the task ahead, driven by passion and the desire to leave the stage as a champion once again.
For Algeria, a team that has struggled to replicate its past glory in recent years, Mahrez’s leadership and hunger may be the spark needed to reignite their continental ambitions.
And for the man himself, one last trophy in green would be the perfect curtain call to an illustrious international journey.
