Algerian midfielder Ismaël Bennacer is set to extend his stay at Olympique de Marseille, with discussions underway for a fresh loan agreement from AC Milan.
The 27-year-old international has been the focus of negotiations as both clubs seek a compromise that would allow Bennacer to continue his career in France.
Bennacer’s initial loan spell at Marseille, which began in January, was marked by inconsistency. Despite arriving with a strong reputation from AC Milan, the Algerian midfielder struggled to find form, hampered by fitness issues stemming from a lengthy injury layoff.
Over the course of 20 appearances in all competitions, Bennacer managed three assists but failed to deliver the impact expected, leading Marseille to hesitate on activating the €12 million purchase option attached to his loan. Additionally, his €6 million yearly wage has proved a financial challenge for the club.
The arrival of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi has shifted the club’s approach. Preparing for a season that includes Champions League football, De Zerbi is keen to integrate Bennacer into his plans, valuing the midfielder’s technical ability and vision.
Bennacer himself is motivated by the prospect of staying in Marseille, especially with the chance to undertake a full pre-season and restore his fitness to peak levels.
Meanwhile, AC Milan appears unwilling to reinstate Bennacer in their squad, making a renewed loan deal the most viable path forward. Reports indicate the next arrangement may exclude an automatic purchase option, providing both clubs with greater flexibility.
Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days as the parties aim to finalize terms. If successful, Bennacer will be granted a second opportunity to establish himself in Marseille’s midfield, aiming to recapture the form that made him a key player at Milan.
For Bennacer, this would be a crucial season to prove his value, both to Marseille and potentially beyond, while the club looks to solidify its squad ahead of a demanding campaign in domestic and European competitions.
