Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar weighs Premier League move as Bournemouth show interest
Houssem Aouar could be on the verge of a return to European football after a successful debut season in Saudi Arabia with Al Ittihad.
The 27-year-old Algerian midfielder, who left AS Roma last summer, is now reportedly being targeted by Premier League side AFC Bournemouth ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
Aouar played a key role in Al Ittihad’s league and cup double, registering 13 goals and four assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.
His impact in Jeddah has not gone unnoticed, and despite some mixed reviews, the former Lyon man has revived his form and fitness after several injury-plagued seasons in Europe.
According to sources close to the matter, Bournemouth have identified Aouar as a potential midfield reinforcement and have already initiated contact with the Saudi club.
The player, under contract with Al Ittihad until June 2028, is said to be open to discussions.
Frankly, I’m not closed to anything at all. Anything can happen in football, Aouar told L’Équipe in a recent interview, indicating that he is willing to listen to offers if the right opportunity arises.
Financially, a return to Europe is no longer as complicated as it might have once been.
Aouar currently earns just over €6 million annually in Saudi Arabia, but Premier League clubs—particularly those with stable broadcasting revenues like Bournemouth—are well placed to meet those figures or offer a competitive package.
The Cherries, who finished 9th in the Premier League last season, are reportedly confident they can secure the Algerian international’s signature, seeing him as a versatile addition to their midfield options.
Interest in Aouar is not limited to England.
Ligue 1 clubs Olympique de Marseille and Lille OSC have also been linked with a move.
Both clubs are preparing for Champions League football, and the chance to return home and feature on Europe’s biggest stage could appeal to the Lyon-born midfielder.
However, matching his current salary may prove a stumbling block for any potential deal within the French league.
As the summer transfer window unfolds, Aouar’s next move remains uncertain.
Whether he stays in Saudi Arabia, heads back to Ligue 1, or takes on a new challenge in the Premier League, one thing is clear: his resurgence has reignited demand for his talents.
