Algeria’s Houssem Aouar sends strong message with record-breaking season at Al Ittihad
Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar has delivered the strongest statement yet in his push for a place in Algeria’s final squad for the 2026 World Cup after reaching a new personal milestone with Al-Ittihad Club.
Aouar scored in Al Ittihad’s victory over Al-Ettifaq FC last Thursday to take his tally to 14 goals in all competitions this season, making it the highest-scoring campaign of his professional career.
The achievement surpasses his previous best return of 13 goals, which he recorded during the last campaign, and arrives at a crucial stage for both club and country as Algeria prepare to announce their final squad for the upcoming World Cup.
The preliminary list for the tournament has already been finalised and submitted, with attention now turning towards the official squad announcement.
Aouar’s recent performances have strengthened his hopes of securing a place in Vladimir Petkovic’s final selection for Algeria.
The 27-year-old remains under contract with Al Ittihad until 2028 and is currently enjoying the most productive spell of his career in front of goal.
His impressive form has come at an important moment after a difficult period with the Algerian national team.
A possible appearance at the 2026 World Cup would represent only the second major international tournament of Aouar’s career with Algeria following the disappointing 2023 AFCON campaign, where the Fennecs were eliminated during the group stage.
The midfielder was also forced to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations through injury, a setback that temporarily interrupted his progress with the national side.
However, since returning to action, Aouar has rediscovered encouraging form and appears to be regaining confidence at both club and international level.
With the final World Cup squad announcement drawing closer, the former Lyon midfielder now looks determined to carry his strong performances into the international stage as he attempts to secure a key role for Algeria at the tournament.
