ES Tunis completed a remarkable domestic double on Sunday, defeating Stade Tunisien 1-0 in the Tunisian Cup final to add to their league title secured just weeks earlier.
A thunderous long-range strike from Nigerian midfielder Onuche Ogbelu proved decisive at the Stade Hammadi Agrebi, sealing the club’s first cup victory since 2016.
The 64th-minute goal came after a corner delivery from Youcef Belaili was partially cleared, allowing Ogbelu to unleash an unstoppable shot from over 30 metres out that left goalkeeper Sami Helal with no chance.
This latest triumph caps off a dominant campaign for ES Tunis, who had already clinched the league title by a four-point margin ahead of US Monastir.
The victory also marks the club’s 16th Tunisian Cup title and their first league-and-cup double since 2011.
For Algerian international Youcef Belaili, the final served as a crowning moment in an exceptional season.
The 32-year-old playmaker ended the campaign with 18 goals and 16 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
The Cup win completes his personal trophy collection with ES Tunis, bringing his tally with the club to ten titles: five league championships, two CAF Champions League titles, two Tunisian Super Cups, and now the long-elusive domestic cup.
Defender Mohamed Amine Tougai, who played a vital role in the club’s defensive solidity throughout the season, also celebrated the double.
Both he and Belaili will now turn their attention to international duty with Algeria, as the Fennecs prepare for friendlies against Rwanda and Sweden.
Following their national team commitments, the duo will travel to the United States, where ES Tunis will compete in the inaugural expanded edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, set to begin on 14 June.
For Stade Tunisien, the final was a missed opportunity to retain the title they won last year.
Despite spells of pressure, especially in the closing stages, they were unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute ES Tunis defence.
With this double secured, ES Tunis reaffirm their status as the dominant force in Tunisian football and now shift focus to representing the country on the global stage later this month.
