Algerian international Alexandre Oukidja faces emotional FC Metz farewell in crucial play-off clash

Alexandre Oukidja is set to make his final appearance for FC Metz on Thursday evening in the decisive Ligue 1-Ligue 2 play-off second leg against Stade de Reims, marking the end of a turbulent chapter for the Algerian international goalkeeper.

Having spent six months without playing a competitive minute, the 36-year-old finds himself thrust into the spotlight for what could be his last match in professional football, with his contract at Metz expiring in a matter of days.

The encounter at Stade Auguste-Delaune is not only pivotal for Metz’s hopes of returning to France’s top flight but also symbolic of the uncertain future that awaits Oukidja.

The first leg ended 1-1 at Saint-Symphorien, leaving everything to play for in the return fixture.

If Metz triumphs, they will secure a spot in Ligue 1. If not, the curtain may fall on Oukidja’s time at the club with a bitter taste.

“Technically unemployed” since 14 December 2024—his last appearance coming against Annecy—Oukidja has seen his fortunes dramatically reversed.

Once considered a mainstay and leader in the dressing room, he fell to fifth in the pecking order behind Pape Sy, Arnaud Bodart, Luca Pause, and the young Alexis Mirbach.

Just weeks before losing his starting position, he had been voted among the top three players of the month, a testament to his enduring quality.

But something shifted behind the scenes, and he was abruptly dropped—first to the bench, then to the stands.

His exclusion baffled many, especially given the absence of any apparent issues in his on-pitch performances.

Explaining the decision, head coach Stéphane Le Mignan hinted at dissatisfaction with the attitude of some players.

“We had a period where we were not very satisfied with the players who came on, because they were not decisive,” Le Mignan said. “Keeping a squad mobilised is the hardest thing for a staff.”

In recent weeks, Oukidja has been restored to the bench, serving as a backup in Metz’s narrow win over Dunkerque and the first leg against Reims.

That return has brought a measure of dignity to what had become a painfully quiet exit.

The former USM Alger and Strasbourg shot-stopper, who also served as backup to Raïs M’Bolhi during Algeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, now finds himself at a crossroads.

With no contract renewal in sight and no current place in the national setup, Oukidja faces an uncertain future.

Thursday’s play-off could end with Metz sealing a dramatic promotion, but for Oukidja, it will close a seven-season spell defined by loyalty, leadership—and lately, heartbreak.
