Algerian forward Saïd Benrahma seals permanent switch to Saudi club Neom

Benrahma

Saïd Benrahma’s time at Olympique Lyonnais has officially come to a close following the completion of a permanent transfer to Saudi Arabian club Neom.

The Algerian international had joined Neom on loan during the January transfer window, and the club has now triggered its option to buy after securing promotion to the Saudi Pro League.

The move, confirmed in the aftermath of Neom’s decisive 3–0 victory over Al Arabi, marks a significant new chapter in the 29-year-old winger’s career.

Benrahma’s switch could reportedly generate up to €15 million for Lyon, providing a welcome boost to the French side’s finances amid efforts to stabilise their accounts after a turbulent domestic season.

A product of French football’s youth systems before making a name for himself in England with Brentford and later West Ham United, Benrahma arrived at Lyon with considerable expectations.

However, his spell in Ligue 1 proved short-lived, with limited opportunities and a search for regular playing time prompting the temporary move to Saudi Arabia.

His stint at Neom has rejuvenated his form. In the few months since his arrival, Benrahma has emerged as a key figure in the club’s successful campaign for promotion.

His attacking flair, technical quality, and experience have made a notable impact in the Saudi First Division, with his contributions instrumental in the club’s rise to the top tier.

Neom’s promotion-clinching win, which confirmed their place in the 2025–26 Roshn Saudi League, triggered the pre-agreed purchase clause in Benrahma’s loan deal.

Club officials were reportedly eager to finalise the agreement, having been impressed by the Algerian’s influence both on and off the pitch.

The permanent transfer also signals Benrahma’s long-term commitment to Saudi football. At 29, the forward appears to have found a new environment in which to thrive, far from the pressures of European competition.

His decision reflects a broader trend of high-profile players seeking opportunities in the increasingly ambitious Saudi football landscape.

For Lyon, the sale brings financial relief and an opportunity to redirect focus toward restructuring the squad.

The French side, currently rebuilding under new leadership, will look to reinvest the proceeds from Benrahma’s transfer to strengthen key areas ahead of the new season.

Benrahma, who has earned over 20 caps for the Algerian national team, remains an important figure for his country.

With Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on the horizon, regular playing time and strong performances at club level will be crucial as he aims to maintain his place in the national squad.

His move to Neom underlines the evolving dynamics of the global transfer market, with the Saudi Pro League continuing to attract talent from Europe.

For Benrahma, the transfer represents a fresh start and a chance to further shape his career in a rapidly growing footballing destination.

As the new Saudi league season approaches, all eyes will be on how Benrahma and Neom adapt to the top flight—and whether the winger can continue the momentum that has seen him reestablish himself as a potent attacking force.
