Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura emerges as top target for Bayer Leverkusen in summer window

Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura emerges as top target for Bayer Leverkusen in summer window

Mohamed Amoura has attracted serious interest from Bundesliga runners-up Bayer Leverkusen following a standout debut season with VfL Wolfsburg.

The Algerian international enjoyed a prolific 2024–25 campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing 9 assists across 31 appearances.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, with German outlets WAZ and Kicker reporting that the 24-year-old is now high on Leverkusen’s summer shortlist as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Amoura’s blend of pace, tactical awareness, and positional versatility has made him one of the most sought-after forwards in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen’s recruitment team is believed to be highly impressed by his ability to operate across the front line, an asset that could prove vital given the expected departures of key players such as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong during the off-season.

Although Leverkusen have yet to appoint a permanent successor to Xabi Alonso, who is stepping down as manager, the club’s transfer strategy is already in motion. Amoura has reportedly been identified as a leading candidate to reinforce the squad, regardless of who takes charge on the touchline next season.

Wolfsburg, who initially brought Amoura in on loan from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, made the move permanent for a reported €15 million plus a €3 million loan fee.

However, the club is reportedly open to a sale this summer, provided a significant offer is made. Wolfsburg have set their valuation at €50 million — a figure that does not appear to deter Leverkusen, who are financially well-prepared for an aggressive transfer window.

In addition to Leverkusen, several other European clubs are monitoring Amoura’s situation closely. Eintracht Frankfurt — set to compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League — have shown continued interest, as have Premier League sides Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Arsenal.

Forest have sent scouts to observe the forward on multiple occasions, while Liverpool and Arsenal remain at the preliminary stage of enquiries, with no formal approach made as of yet.

The race for Amoura’s signature is expected to heat up quickly, especially with this summer’s transfer market set to open earlier than usual due to the scheduling of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The window will officially begin between 1 and 10 June, prompting clubs to move swiftly in finalising key deals.

For Amoura, the coming weeks may determine the trajectory of a career already on the rise. His breakthrough in Germany has positioned him as one of Africa’s most promising attacking talents, and a potential move to Leverkusen — a club known for developing and showcasing young players on the European stage — could provide the platform for his next big leap.

As the transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on the negotiations between Wolfsburg and their suitors. Whether he stays or moves on, Mohamed Amoura’s name is certain to be among the most talked-about in this summer’s market.
