Renowned Algerian footballer Youcef Belaïli, hailed for his exceptional performance on the pitch, finds himself in troubled waters once again, as his recent disciplinary infractions may jeopardize his position in the national team.Belaïli, who boasts an impressive record of 54 caps and 9 goals, has been enjoying a prolific season with MC Alger, notching up 10 goals in 13 Algerian D1 matches. However, his on-field excellence has been marred by a string of behavioral issues, raising concerns about his continued participation in the Algerian national squad.
The seasoned player’s latest transgressions occurred during a match against ES Sétif, where he received two yellow cards for protest and unsportsmanlike behavior towards the referee.
The incident escalated as Belaïli made an obscene gesture towards the audience, sparking a general brawl on the field. This follows a previous incident against Constantine, resulting in a 100,000 DA fine.
In response to the repeated breaches of conduct, the Algerian Football League (LFP) handed down a significant penalty on Monday. Belaïli faces a six-match suspension, with two matches suspended, and an additional fine of 100,000 DA, underscoring the severity of the disciplinary measures.
While voices have emerged challenging the perceived harshness of the sanctions, the MC Alger is reportedly considering filing an appeal.
Nonetheless, the suspension places Belaïli at risk of missing crucial matches, including the upcoming friendlies against Bolivia on March 22 and South Africa on March 26.
Algerian national team coach Vladimir Petkovic, who recently assumed the role, has emphasized the importance of discipline within the squad.
In a press conference on Monday, Petkovic asserted, “We must also set rules that everyone must respect,” hinting at a stringent approach towards maintaining order and professionalism within the team.
Despite Belaïli’s noteworthy individual performance during the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON), his disciplinary challenges may hinder his inclusion in the national team, casting a shadow over his international prospects for the upcoming matches.
