Ayman Benarous will leave Bristol City this summer, bringing an end to his long-standing association with the club following a succession of injuries that have stalled his professional career.
The 21-year-old midfielder’s contract will expire on 30 June, with the club opting not to offer a renewal. The decision marks a poignant conclusion to Benarous’ journey at Ashton Gate, where he has been a part of the setup since the age of six.
Once regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Bristol City’s academy, Benarous signed his first professional contract in 2021. He made his senior debut in the same year and went on to feature in 11 Championship matches during the 2021–2022 season.
However, that initial momentum was soon halted by a series of injuries that have since kept him from re-establishing himself within the first team.
Despite returning to training in recent weeks and even making an appearance for the club’s reserve side, Benarous remains far from full match fitness.
Persistent physical setbacks have limited his ability to train and play consistently, ultimately raising doubts about his long-term viability as a professional player at this level.
Bristol City, recognising the difficulties he has faced, have nonetheless made the decision to part ways, a move that reflects the harsh realities of professional football where potential often succumbs to physical constraints.
Supporters of the club, many of whom followed Benarous’ journey through the youth ranks, have expressed an outpouring of sympathy and admiration for the young player.
Social media was flooded with heartfelt messages wishing him well and thanking him for his commitment to the club over the past 15 years.
Though born and raised in England, Benarous holds dual nationality and is of Algerian descent. He has been viewed by fans of both nations as a player of significant promise.
That promise, however, has been repeatedly undermined by injuries that have restricted his development at a crucial stage in his career.
The club has not ruled out the possibility of Benarous continuing his rehabilitation and future playing career elsewhere, though it is understood that his immediate focus will be on regaining full fitness and proving his resilience beyond the confines of Bristol City.
His departure will undoubtedly be felt across the club’s fanbase, especially among those who watched him rise through the youth system with high hopes.Yet for Benarous, this ending may also signal a fresh start—a chance to reset and redefine his path in football, even if it is away from the club he has called home since childhood.
While Bristol City move forward with their plans for the upcoming season, the exit of a homegrown talent like Benarous serves as a reminder of the fine margins that separate potential from permanence in the sport.
