Youcef Atal linked with JS Kabylie move

JS Kabylie are weighing up a move for Algeria international Youcef Atal as the club continues its rebuilding project, although the defender’s long history of injuries remains a major consideration before any deal is completed.

The Kabylie side are looking to reshape their squad after a disappointing campaign on both the domestic and continental fronts. Under new president Adel Boudjellal, the club has begun laying the foundations for a fresh era, with recruitment becoming one of its immediate priorities.

That rebuilding process has already seen Karim Belhocine appointed as head coach and Yazid Mansouri take over as sporting director.

The club has also strengthened its squad with five new signings during the current transfer window, including 22-year-old attacking midfielder Badis Bouamama, who joined from ES Ben Aknoun.

Despite those arrivals, JS Kabylie are continuing to explore further additions as they seek the right balance between youth and experience ahead of the new season.

The club had initially explored the possibility of bringing back former Algeria international Yacine Brahimi. However, that option ended after the midfielder completed a move to Al-Abha following four years with Al Gharafa.

Attention has now turned to Atal, who is available as a free agent after the expiry of his previous contract. The experienced right-back has emerged as one of the leading names under consideration as JS Kabylie look to strengthen their defensive options.

Reinforcing the back line has become an important objective, particularly after criticism directed at Fares Nechat over his performances in recent seasons.

While no official agreement has been announced, reports suggest negotiations are progressing positively.

Although Atal’s experience at both club and international level makes him an attractive option, his fitness record presents a significant concern.

Since making his Algeria debut in 2017, the defender has missed 14 national team gatherings because of injury. That record has limited his appearances for the national side despite being regarded as one of the country’s first-choice right-backs when fully fit.

His spell with Al-Sadd in Qatar has done little to ease those concerns. During both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 league campaigns, Atal featured in only six league matches each season, a return well below what would normally be expected from a regular starter.

A recent injury also brought his latest season to an early end and ruled him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, denying him the opportunity to represent Algeria on football’s biggest stage.

His injury problems stretch back several years. While playing for OGC Nice, Atal endured a particularly difficult period in which he suffered six separate injuries within a matter of months.

Those setbacks included repeated thigh problems, as well as ankle and hamstring injuries, keeping him sidelined for almost three months.

As JS Kabylie continue to strengthen their squad, the potential signing of Atal represents both opportunity and risk. His quality and experience could significantly improve the team, but his recurring fitness issues remain a crucial factor the club must carefully assess before making a final decision.
