Algeria edge closer to U17 AFCON qualification after Tunisia draw
Algeria moved to the verge of qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations after holding Tunisia to a 1-1 draw in the UNAF qualifiers, a result that leaves the Tunisian side facing a difficult path to the finals.
The fourth-round encounter, played on Thursday, 2 April 2026, saw the young Algerian side strengthen their position in the standings, while Tunisia’s hopes of advancing were significantly weakened.
Algeria now sit third in the group and are close to securing their place in the tournament, whereas Tunisia remain fourth with four points from four matches.
The match began with Algeria asserting early pressure, despite Tunisia needing a victory to keep their qualification hopes firmly alive.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Yacine Abed produced an acrobatic volley to give Algeria the lead, placing Tunisia on the back foot.
Tunisia responded with determination and managed to level the score before the break.
Moncef Thabti found the net with a header in the 38th minute, restoring parity and offering renewed hope to his side heading into the second half.
After the interval, Tunisia pushed forward in search of a decisive goal, creating several opportunities but failing to convert.
Yahia Jlidi came close in the 62nd minute, while Edem Borji and Islem Aloui also had chances but were unable to find the breakthrough.
The final whistle confirmed a result that favoured Algeria more than their opponents.
While Tunisia’s qualification chances now depend on a heavy defeat for Algeria in their final match, the Algerian team remain in a strong position.
Algeria will face Egypt in their last fixture on 5 April, knowing that avoiding a loss by four goals or more will secure their place at the U17 AFCON finals.
The outcome leaves Tunisia on the brink of elimination, while Algeria look set to complete their qualification campaign.
