As Coach Djamel Belmadi and the Algerian national football team intensify their preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Ivory Coast, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is already setting its sights on a post-tournament international break
In a strategic move, the FAF has curated a compelling program for March 2024, organizing a prestigious friendly tournament that will feature four teams from three different continents.
Scheduled to unfold from March 19 to 26, immediately following the conclusion of the 34th edition of AFCON, the tournament is poised to bring together footballing talent from South America, Europe, and Africa.
According to Algerian press reports, the Fennecs, Algeria’s national team, will lock horns with the South American side Bolivia, the European contender Albania, and the African nation South Africa.
The competition will adopt a unique format, akin to a mini-championship, featuring only first-leg matches. Each team will engage in three fixtures, and the ultimate champion will be determined by the cumulative rankings at the conclusion of the third matchday.
The collaboration for this international football spectacle was reportedly solidified during the recent Club World Cup, where discussions between FAF President Walid Sadi and his Bolivian counterpart Fernando Costa led to a consensus.
Notably, the agreement coincided with the impressive performance of Egyptian club Al Ahly, securing a third-place finish with a 2-4 victory against Urawa Reds.
While details regarding the exact venues for the tournament remain undisclosed, the 5 July 1962 Stadium in Algiers and the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki have emerged as likely contenders.
The FAF is expected to provide official confirmation in the ensuing hours or days, heightening anticipation for a footballing extravaganza that promises to captivate audiences and showcase international prowess beyond the borders of AFCON 2023.
