Algeria new Keeper Melvin Mastel reflects on debut against Guatemala
Algeria’s newest shot-stopper Melvin Mastel has revealed his surprise at being thrust straight into the starting lineup during his first-ever call-up, marking a dream debut in the Desert Foxes’ emphatic victory over Guatemala.
The Swiss-based goalkeeper, who plies his trade with FC Stade Nyonnais, was handed the gloves in what turned out to be a memorable night, as Algeria cruised to a dominant 7-0 win in a friendly encounter.
Reflecting on the moment, Mastel admitted the rapid turn of events caught him off guard.
“In football, anything can happen quickly,” he said. “I knew I would be starting the day before the match, and I was a little surprised.”
The decision came from head coach Vladimir Petković, who opted to rotate his squad and give new faces valuable minutes as they integrate into the national setup.
For Mastel, it was more than just a debut—it was the realization of a lifelong ambition.
“This is unbelievable. I’ve dreamed of playing for the national team since I was little. It’s a great honor to be among players of this caliber,” he said. “Sometimes it’s hard to believe, but now I’m part of the team.”
The 24-year-old also revealed a special moment before kickoff, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez during the national anthem.
“Mahrez gave me advice before we went onto the pitch. He told me to stay true to myself and play in my own style, just like I do at my club,” Mastel shared.
Backed by that encouragement, the debutant delivered a composed performance between the posts, helping Algeria keep a clean sheet in a one-sided contest.
Despite the fairytale start, Mastel remains grounded about his future with the team.
“It was a perfect match for my debut. I tried to give my best,” he said. “Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll be part of the coach’s plans for the World Cup. I see this as an opportunity to show what I can do—the final decision is up to him.”
With a debut like this, however, Mastel has certainly made a statement—and may have just played his way firmly into Algeria’s World Cup conversation.
