Major test confirmed as Algeria add Netherlands to World Cup build-up

Algeria have confirmed a high-profile friendly against the Netherlands in June, meaning three-quarters of their preparation schedule for the 2026 World Cup is now in place.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced that the Fennecs will face the world’s seventh-ranked side on 3 June at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam.

The fixture will form part of their final training camp before the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The meeting with the Dutch represents a significant step in Algeria’s build-up.

As quarter-finalists at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, they are seeking strong opposition to sharpen their competitive edge before travelling to North America.

The Netherlands, known as the Oranje, provide one of the toughest available tests.

With this confirmation, Algeria have secured three of four intended opponents ahead of the World Cup.

In March, they are scheduled to play Guatemala in Genoa on 27 March before facing Uruguay in Turin four days later.

Those matches will offer an early opportunity to assess form and cohesion before the June gathering.

Only one slot in the programme remains unfilled.

England had initially been considered as a potential opponent, but that option appears unlikely following the announcement of the Three Lions’ fixtures against New Zealand and Costa Rica during the same period.

Attention has therefore shifted elsewhere.

Italy, four-time world champions, could emerge as a candidate to complete Algeria’s preparations, provided they navigate the European play-offs and qualify for the tournament themselves.

The expanding schedule underlines the federation’s intent to ensure thorough preparation.

By arranging competitive friendlies across different venues and against varied styles of opposition, Algeria aim to enter the World Cup with momentum and clarity.

With the Netherlands now officially added, much of the roadmap is set.

The focus will turn to fine-tuning details and confirming the final opponent as Algeria continue their structured approach to 2026.
