The Algerian Football Federation is on the brink of finalizing a deal with an experienced coach with a proven track record in international tournaments to lead the Algeria national team following the departure of Djamel Belmadi.
According to media reports, Swiss coach Vladimir Petković is close to signing with the Algerian national team to lead them in the upcoming phase, which includes the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Who is Petković?
Vladimir Petković, 60, is a Swiss coach of Bosnian descent with extensive European experience, particularly with the Swiss national team.
Petković has coached the Swiss national team for seven years, preceded by stints with various clubs, most notably Lazio in Italy.
Specialist in International Tournaments
Petković is renowned for his expertise in international tournaments, having successfully guided Switzerland through all the international competitions in which they participated.
He has consistently led Switzerland past the group stages in both the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship.
Before his international tenure, Petković led Lazio to victory in the Coppa Italia, defeating their rivals Roma in the final of the 2013 edition.
Algerian Conditions
Algerian National Radio reported that the former Swiss coach would be obliged to meet two fundamental conditions in his proposed contract with the Algerian national team.
Firstly, he must qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and secondly, he must reach at least the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
It appears that Petković has been chosen after the Algerian Football Federation deliberated among several coaches in recent weeks.
Algerian Football Federation President, Walid Sadi, reportedly traveled to Switzerland in the final hours to meet with Petković to finalize the terms of the anticipated contract between the veteran coach and the Algerian national team.
