The Algerian Ligue 1 Mobilis clash between CS Constantine and USM Alger, held on Monday evening at the Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium, ended in a 1-1 draw but was overshadowed by serious incidents that prompted swift action from the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) disciplinary committee. Less than 48 hours after the disturbances, severe penalties have been imposed on CS Constantine.
The disciplinary committee has handed down a suspension that mandates six matches behind closed doors for CS Constantine.
The first three of these home matches must be played outside of Constantine, with no fans allowed to attend.
This decision comes as a direct consequence of the violent behavior exhibited by some supporters during the match.
Financially, CS Constantine has been hit with a fine of approximately 400,000 dinars. Additionally, the club is responsible for covering all costs associated with the material damage caused at the Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium.
In a further blow, CS Constantine will also be deprived of the television revenues from the match against USM Alger.
USM Alger, while not escaping unscathed, received lesser sanctions. The club was fined 20,000 dinars for the use and throwing of smoke bombs onto the pitch.
Additionally, they incurred a 400,000 dinar fine for causing damage to equipment in the stands.
The incidents during the match have sparked a broader conversation about fan behavior and the measures needed to ensure safety and sportsmanship in Algerian football.
The LFP’s quick and decisive action aims to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that clubs will be held accountable for the actions of their supporters.
As the season progresses, both CS Constantine and USM Alger will need to navigate the repercussions of these sanctions, which not only impact their financial standing but also their home game advantages.
The penalties serve as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining order and discipline both on and off the pitch.
