Vahid Halilhodzic, the national coach of Algeria, has expressed his plans to end his coaching career in France. The Bosnian coach, under contract with the Algerian national team until 2014, has a desire to rebuild his image in France, particularly after what he describes as a disastrous departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2005.
“When I had to leave PSG in 2005, I was disgusted by the image of a heartless tyrant that certain journalists and managers gave of me. It was meant to destroy me. Since then, I have received dozens of offers, but I don’t want to start at the bottom of the ladder or in weird places. Above all, I cannot conclude my career without returning one day to France to erase the apocalyptic memory of my departure from PSG,” declared Halilhodzic to L’Équipe Mag.
This statement reflects Halilhodzic’s desire to address the negative perception that arose from his departure from PSG and to conclude his coaching career on a positive note in France. Algeria, however, is currently counting on him for the 2014 World Cup, and his focus remains on leading the national team in that competition.
Coaches often have personal and professional goals, and it will be interesting to see how Halilhodzic’s career evolves, both with Algeria in upcoming competitions and in his potential return to France in the future.
