Vladimir Petković's future under review after Algeria's World Cup 2026 exit

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković is facing an uncertain future after the national team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) reportedly considering an amicable end to his tenure following the defeat to Switzerland.

The Desert Foxes saw their World Cup campaign come to an end with a 2-0 loss in the Round of 32, a result that has prompted discussions within the federation over the direction of the national team.

According to sources, FAF president Walid Sadi is seriously evaluating whether to bring Petković’s spell in charge to an early conclusion.

The disappointment surrounding Algeria’s exit from the tournament has reportedly led senior federation officials to reassess the coach’s position despite his recent contract extension.

Petković is expected to present a comprehensive report on Algeria’s World Cup campaign after the squad returns to Algiers. The document will outline the team’s performances during the tournament and will form the basis of discussions with the federation’s leadership.

Following that meeting, the FAF’s Federal Bureau is due to convene to examine the report before reaching a final decision on the Bosnian coach’s future.

The review comes only weeks after the federation confirmed a two-year contract extension for Petković on the eve of the World Cup. At the time, the decision reflected the FAF’s commitment to continuing the sporting project under the former Lazio manager.

However, Algeria’s elimination in the first knockout round has placed that long-term plan under renewed scrutiny, with the federation now reassessing its next steps.

Should the FAF decide to terminate the agreement, the contract reportedly includes a clause entitling Petković to compensation equivalent to two months’ salary for the early termination of his deal.

For now, no final decision has been announced, but the coming days are expected to be decisive as the federation completes its evaluation of the national team’s World Cup campaign.

The outcome of the review will determine whether Petković remains at the helm of Algeria or whether the Desert Foxes begin the search for a new head coach following their early exit from the tournament.
