The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is working to finalize a second friendly match on home soil in June, with Niger emerging as the frontrunner.
However, alternative opponents are still under consideration.
Algeria has already confirmed a friendly against Sweden in Stockholm on June 10, as initially reported by Africasoccer and later validated by the FAF.
The federation aims to arrange a preparatory fixture against an African team before departing for Sweden, with Niger currently the leading candidate.
Discussions Ongoing for a Suitable Opponent
Saïd Fellak, the FAF’s communications officer, acknowledged ongoing talks with Niger but indicated that other options remain on the table.
“We have made good progress with Niger, but we are still in discussions with other African teams,” Fellak told Dzair Tube.
“The objective is to provide Vladimir Petkovic’s squad with a suitable preparation match that will help them build rhythm and test tactical setups ahead of the Sweden game.”
On paper, Niger appears to be a logical choice. The two sides previously clashed in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, where Algeria secured a 2-0 victory in the second leg following a 1-1 draw in the first. Managed by Moroccan coach Badou Zaki, Niger has shown signs of progress, recently pushing Morocco in a narrow 2-1 defeat. A friendly against Algeria would serve as a valuable test for their development.
FAF Keeps Options Open Despite Niger Leading the Race
While Niger remains the preferred opponent, the FAF has not ruled out a last-minute change. The primary goal is to ensure that the selected team aligns with Petkovic’s tactical needs.
“We have to make sure this match benefits our preparation, which is why we are still evaluating multiple options,” Fellak added.
Algeria enjoyed a successful international break in March, registering victories over Botswana (3-1) and Mozambique (2-0).
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approaching, the Fennecs are eager to maintain their momentum. While Niger is currently the top contender for the June friendly, an official announcement is still pending.
