Algeria consider Vladimir Petkovic’s future after disappointing World Cup exit
Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic is facing an uncertain future following the Desert Foxes’ elimination in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The early exit has sparked widespread criticism, with the team’s performances and Petkovic’s squad management coming under intense scrutiny.
According to reports, the Algerian Football Federation is dissatisfied not only with the team’s failure to progress further in the tournament but also with the manner of their elimination.
Although Petkovic recently signed a contract extension, federation officials are reportedly weighing up whether to part ways with the Swiss coach after the disappointing campaign.
Concerns have also been raised over tactical shortcomings that critics believe were evident during Algeria’s defeat to Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and resurfaced at the World Cup.
Reports indicate that no formal decision has been taken, but discussions are underway over the possibility of reaching a mutual agreement that would see Petkovic leave the role in exchange for compensation equivalent to five or six months’ salary.
However, negotiations could prove difficult. Petkovic is understood to believe he has fulfilled the objectives set for him and has privately maintained that he has done his job, a stance that could complicate any attempt to end his tenure by mutual consent.
The Algerian Football Federation has yet to make an official statement on Petkovic’s future.
