Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic is facing another potential setback ahead of the March international break, with Youcef Atal emerging as a fresh injury concern.

The right-back, who joined Qatari side Al-Sadd earlier this season, was forced off in the 64th minute during Monday’s 1-1 draw against Al-Wasl in the Asian Champions League.

Atal had been delivering a solid performance before appearing to sustain an injury, adding to Algeria’s selection worries.

Persistent Fitness Issues

Atal’s struggles with injuries have been a recurring issue throughout his career. The 27-year-old had only recently returned from a thigh injury sustained in February, while a similar setback sidelined him in October 2024 during a previous Asian Champions League fixture.

His latest injury comes at a difficult time for Petkovic, who is already without central defender Mohamed Amine Tougai for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Botswana on March 17 and Mozambique on March 24.

Algeria’s Defensive Options

Atal’s absence would leave Algeria short of experience at right-back. Mohamed Farsi and Aïssa Mandi are among the candidates to fill the void, with the latter also capable of playing in central defense.

Petkovic will be hoping for positive news on Atal’s condition as Algeria seeks to bolster their squad for the crucial qualifiers.
