Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković has downplayed the ongoing debate surrounding Omar Rafik’s decision to forgo representing the national team, wishing the player well but making it clear that his focus remains on those committed to the squad.
During a press conference at the Sidi Moussa National Technical Center on Monday, Petković was asked about Rafik, a former FAF academy prospect now playing for Al-Shamal SC in Qatar.
The 21-year-old’s choice not to represent Algeria has sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some viewing it as a loss for the national side and others arguing that players unwilling to commit should not be pressured.
Petković addressed the issue succinctly. “Omar Rafik? I won’t comment on players who aren’t mine,” he stated.
He went on to note that Rafik had only been on the extended squad list, subtly indicating that he was not among the final 26 players selected for the current international window.
The Bosnian coach was firm in his stance, making it clear that the national team will not dwell on those who opt out. “I don’t focus on players who don’t want to be with us.
These are personal decisions, and I wish him the best for his future,” he said.
Rafik’s decision has fueled discussions in Algerian football circles, particularly regarding the approach to dual-nationality players and their commitment to the national team. Some argue that securing talent early is crucial, while others believe that only those eager to wear the Algerian shirt should be considered.
Petković, however, remained unfazed by the controversy, reinforcing his approach to squad management. “The Algerian national team is a collective project.
We need players who are fully dedicated to the cause,” he emphasized.
As Algeria enters a new chapter under Petković’s leadership, the message is clear—only those who are willing and motivated to represent the country will be part of the team.
With World Cup qualifiers and major tournaments ahead, the focus remains on building a committed and unified squad rather than persuading reluctant players to join the ranks.
