Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has reaffirmed his commitment to the national team, stating that replacing him in the squad will not be an easy task in the coming years.
The Al-Ahli winger remains an integral part of Les Fennecs, not just due to his experience and reputation but also because of his consistent performances.
In Algeria’s recent match against Mozambique, the former Manchester City star registered two assists, bringing his total goal contributions for the national team to an impressive 68—comprising 32 goals and 36 assists.
Factoring in three penalties he has won and converted by teammates, Mahrez has now been directly involved in over 70 goals for Algeria, setting a historic record for the nation.
With 100 international caps to his name, the 33-year-old is determined to add another title to his collection, following Algeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph in Egypt.
Aiming for another title
In a video shared by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), Mahrez spoke of his immense pride in representing his country and reaching the 100-cap milestone.
“I’m very proud; it’s an honor for me. Reaching 100 caps for Algeria is incredible. I thank God for these moments,” he said.
Despite speculation about his future with the national team, Mahrez made it clear that retirement is not on the horizon.
The veteran winger confirmed his ambition to continue competing at the highest level and to lead Algeria into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“I would like to play another 25 or 30 matches and win another title. The best way to celebrate would be to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Insha-Allah,” he added.
Algeria has a packed schedule ahead, with at least 10 international fixtures on FIFA matchdays before the World Cup, along with the 2025 AFCON and multiple friendly matches.
These upcoming competitions will offer Mahrez ample opportunities to further cement his legacy with the national team.
With his ongoing influence on and off the pitch, Mahrez remains a key figure for Algeria as they push for more silverware and a return to the World Cup stage.
