Injury Forces Mehdi Abeid Out of Algeria’s AFCON Squad; Ahmed Kashi Called Up
Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid is set to miss the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations due to a lingering toe injury, dealing a blow to Algeria’s preparations for the continental tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
Despite being scheduled to travel to Algiers on Friday for a final assessment, local Algerian media report that the 22-year-old is unlikely to recover in time to feature in the competition. In response, national team coach Christian Gourcuff has called up Ahmed Kashi of FC Metz as a replacement.
Kashi, a dependable presence in Ligue 2, will join the Fennecs after featuring in Metz’s Coupe de France Round of 32 clash this Sunday. This call-up presents a significant opportunity for the 26-year-old to make an impression on the continental stage, especially given the high level of competition Algeria is set to face.
Drawn into what many are calling the “Group of Death,” Algeria will take on three major footballing nations—Ghana, Senegal, and South Africa—during the group phase. With their depth already being tested, the Desert Foxes will need every player to rise to the occasion as they aim to build on their strong showing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Abeid’s absence is particularly disappointing after what had been a promising run of form for both club and country. However, Gourcuff will be hoping that Kashi can fill the void and contribute effectively as Algeria seek their first AFCON title since 1990.
