Senegalese goalkeeper Alfred Gomis, currently on contract with Stade Rennais until June 2025, is determined to reclaim his position as the primary shot-stopper. The 30-year-old, despite being relegated to the third spot in the goalkeeping hierarchy, expresses unwavering resolve to showcase his skills on the pitch.
Gomis, an integral part of Senegal’s 2022 African Nations Cup triumph, underwent a change in his situation at Stade Rennais. After serving as the primary goalkeeper during the 2021/2022 season, he found himself demoted with the arrivals of Steve Mandanda and Gauthier Gallon.
Seeking regular playtime, Gomis made a move to FC Lorient, where he assumed the role of the second goalkeeper behind Yvon Mvogo. Despite acknowledging his status upon arrival, Gomis maintains his ambition to reclaim the number one position.
“When I arrived here, the deal was clear: I arrived as goalkeeper number two,” stated Gomis, as reported by Ouest-France. Even though he adapted to the role of a secondary goalkeeper for two seasons,
Gomis does not consider himself resigned to the position. “I don’t consider myself a number two. In my head, I’m still a number one goalie
This situation strengthens me because I was not used to it,” he confided.
Uncertainty shrouds Gomis regarding his future role at Lorient. The potential departure of Yvon Mvogo in the upcoming summer could pave the way for Gomis to become the main goalkeeper.
However, Gomis remains pragmatic about the situation, stating, “I don’t know. My goal is simply to play, get back into competition, and show my qualities.”
Despite his eagerness to contribute on the field, Gomis will not feature in the upcoming match against Stade Rennais, as contractual constraints prevent him from playing against his former team this weekend.
