Alex Iwobi reflects on his ‘strange’ childhood and bond with his father

Alex Iwobi

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has opened up about his unconventional childhood and his close relationship with his father.

Speaking on the Fulham Fix podcast, the Nigerian international recalled being an energetic and “strange” child who would often run around uncontrollably, kicking chairs and anything within reach.

“My parents say I could run before I could walk,” Iwobi shared, explaining that as a child, he would randomly sprint around the apartment, seemingly out of excitement.

The former Everton midfielder described himself as an overly enthusiastic youngster, constantly on the move and eager to make sliding tackles—even on balloons. His high-energy nature, he suggested, was evident from an early age.

A Father’s Unwavering Support

Iwobi also spoke fondly of his father, whom he described as his biggest supporter. He revealed that his father frequently wears his jersey, even outside the house—something Iwobi finds both touching and slightly embarrassing.

“My dad always wears my jersey. Even when he’s out, he has it on,” he said.

Despite his father’s background as a footballer, Iwobi noted that he refrains from harshly critiquing his performances, unlike many other parents with professional sports experience.

His father, however, does offer occasional advice, particularly when it comes to decision-making on the pitch.

“He doesn’t really criticize my game, but he’ll sometimes ask things like, ‘Why didn’t you shoot there?’” Iwobi revealed. “It’s just part of being a dad.”

The midfielder, who is the nephew of Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha, acknowledged that his father’s support has played a crucial role in his career.

While his enthusiastic nature as a child may have seemed “strange” at the time, it ultimately shaped him into the dynamic footballer he is today.
