Alain Gouaméné says Ivory Coast can handle ‘realistic’ 2026 World Cup group
Ivory Coast enter the 2026 World Cup with Germany, Ecuador, and Curaçao in their group, a draw that Alain Gouaméné views as challenging but entirely within reach.
The former Elephants goalkeeper and current member of the national team’s technical staff assessed the trio of opponents with confidence.
He believes the draw places Ivory Coast “in front of a realistic challenge” and gives the team a genuine chance to advance.
“It’s not an easy group, but it seems manageable to me. Ivory Coast can show ambition and target the second round. In any case, we will be ready,” he told Afrik-Foot.
Gouaméné respects Germany’s pedigree but sees a shift in their aura.
He highlighted their early exits in 2018 and 2022 and argued that Ivory Coast can create problems for them.
He also stressed that Germany’s mentality still drives them and that Ivory Coast must treat that strength with seriousness.
He then turned to Ecuador, a side he considers solid, organised, and technically sharp.
Gouaméné insisted that Ecuador never collapse easily and warned that any form of complacency could punish the Elephants.
“They are a difficult opponent. And it would be a big mistake to underestimate them,” he said.
He also urged supporters and players not to overlook Curaçao, who arrive at the tournament for the first time.
Gouaméné believes their qualification shows real progress and determination, not luck.
“It would be a huge mistake to underestimate this team. That would be the surest way to fail! If they qualified, it wasn’t by chance,” he added.
Gouaméné’s message centres on respect, focus, and ambition.
He believes Ivory Coast hold the tools to navigate the group successfully if they show discipline and avoid taking any opponent lightly.
His optimism reflects a growing belief within the Ivorian camp that the team can compete with conviction on the World Cup stage.
