It’s now official. The French coach was formally introduced on Tuesday in Dakar during a press conference organized by the FSF (Senegalese Football Federation). Alain Giresse is set to lead the Lions of Teranga for a two-year term, marking his third stint coaching an African national team after Gabon and Mali.
Giresse joins Senegal, still recovering from a painful elimination in CAN 2013 by Ivory Coast. His specific objective is to guide the Lions to qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 CAN in Morocco. The former Bordeaux coach steps in for Joseph Koto, who was relieved of his duties the day after the elimination by the Elephants.
In December, the Senegalese Football Federation unveiled a shortlist of five candidates for the national coach position. Alongside Giresse, the list featured Senegalese Aliou Cissé, Frenchman Jacques Santini, German Volker Finke, and Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson.
