Al Hilal boss Simone Inzaghi walks a disciplinary tightrope after early booking

Simone Inzaghi was shown a yellow card after leaving his technical area to protest during Al Hilal’s Saudi Pro League match against Al Ahli on Tuesday.

The Italian coach, who took charge of Al Hilal, reacted angrily to a decision made by Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela around 15 minutes into the postponed fixture at Kingdom Arena.

Inzaghi moved beyond the designated coaching area and appeared close to entering the pitch as he challenged the official’s decision. Valenzuela responded by cautioning the Al Hilal manager, leaving him at risk of a second booking and possible dismissal for the remainder of the match.

The incident came during a high-profile Saudi Pro League meeting between two of the competition’s leading sides. Al Hilal hosted Al Ahli in a game rearranged from the third round of the domestic league campaign.

The booking meant Inzaghi had to manage his conduct carefully from the touchline after the early confrontation. Having already been cautioned, any further intervention judged to be worthy of a card could have resulted in the Italian being sent off.

Despite the disciplinary setback for their manager, Al Hilal made an impressive start on the field. Before half-time, they had established a 2-0 lead against Al Ahli.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic opened the scoring for the home side before Crysencio Summerville added a second, giving Al Hilal a commanding advantage before the interval. The pair’s goals put the hosts firmly in control of the early stages of the match.

The contest was being played at Kingdom Arena as part of the Saudi Pro League, with Al Ahli visiting Al Hilal for the rearranged fixture on Tuesday evening.

Inzaghi’s booking became one of the early talking points of the match, with the Al Hilal manager’s reaction to Valenzuela’s call captured on video. The referee’s decision ensured the former Inter Milan coach would have to remain within the limits of the technical area and avoid any further confrontation with the officials.

The match therefore produced two notable developments before the break: Al Hilal’s two-goal advantage and the caution issued to their manager. While the hosts’ players took control through goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Crysencio Summerville, Inzaghi was left with the added pressure of continuing the game while already on a yellow card.
