Wael Gomaa, the legendary defender and captain of Al Ahly, has announced his decision to retire from professional football at the end of the season. The announcement came just after Al Ahly’s victory in the Egyptian Super Cup against CS Sfaxien.
Gomaa, who joined Al Ahly in 2001 from Ghazl El Mahalla, has had a remarkable career with the Red Devils. He has been an integral part of the team, contributing to numerous victories and titles. Throughout his time with Al Ahly, Gomaa has won an impressive array of trophies, including 6 Champions League titles, 6 Super Cups, 7 Egyptian championships, 3 National Cups, and 6 Egyptian Super Cups.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Gomaa expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for Al Ahly and the joy of leaving the club on a high note with a victory. He also acknowledged the collective effort of his generation in achieving success and bringing happiness to the club’s fans.
In addition to his club success, Gomaa has also had a distinguished international career with the Egyptian national team, earning over 100 caps. He played a crucial role in Egypt’s triumphs in the African Cup of Nations, winning the tournament three times consecutively in 2006, 2008, and 2010.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Gomaa’s only regret is not being able to represent Egypt in the FIFA World Cup, a dream that has eluded the national team since 1990.
Wael Gomaa’s retirement marks the end of an era in Egyptian football, and his legacy as a true legend of the game will be difficult to replace for both Al Ahly and the Egyptian national team.
