Al Ahly’s clever response to billion pound team label
Al Ahly board member Mohamed El-Ghazawy has brushed off the label of “billion pound team,” following their Egyptian Super Cup victory over Zamalek.
El-Ghazawy said on radio, “Coach Jess Torup is leading the team confidently and steadily to more trophies. Our coach puts Al Ahly on the podium every time, the players lived up to the challenge and share one spirit.”
El-Ghazawy praised Zamalek’s Ahmed Mostafa Zizo for his character, saying, “Zizo is an exceptionally disciplined player with a strong personality. He handled criticism from rival fans admirably.” He added, “I don’t understand the meaning of a billion-pound team. Sports is now an industry; big clubs need big players to win titles and increase sponsorship value.”
He emphasized, “Al Ahly’s destiny is to win every competition. The fans expect victory; we have Africa’s largest squad.” The club boasts an impressive regime, rules, and values, which El-Ghazawy credits for keeping internal harmony.
After their win, Al Ahly returned to Cairo, and some stars joined national camps for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, though, remained in Egypt after a muscle injury. The team’s recent cup takes their total trophies to 156, with contributions from 120 players in sixteen Super Cup victories.
