Al Ahly targets referee in Al Hilal game with complaint after heated clash

The Al Ahly camp is annoyed following their 1-0 victory over Sudan’s Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals first leg on Tuesday at Cairo International Stadium.

The Egyptian giants are gearing up to lodge an official grievance against Chadian referee Mohamed El-Hajji, who oversaw the tense match. The issue? El-Hajji’s physical altercation with Al Ahly’s right-back Mohamed Hani, which has sparked outrage within the club.

An Al Ahly insider told Kooora: “We are already preparing to file a complaint against the referee within hours, because pushing him in that manner is illegal.”

The insider didn’t hold back, adding: “The scene was ugly, and if Mohamed Hany hadn’t held his nerve, the situation would have escalated and he might have been sent off.”

They went further, slamming El-Hajji’s performance: “The referee was not up to the task of such an important match in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.”

The stakes are high as the return leg looms in Mauritania on April 8.
