Al Ahly set to unveil Hussein Ammouta as new head coach in Cairo on Tuesday
Egyptian giants Al Ahly will officially present Houcine Ammouta as their new head coach on Tuesday, the club confirmed on Sunday.
The Moroccan tactician was appointed in mid-June and has signed a two-year contract as he takes charge of one of Africa’s most successful clubs.
Ammouta replaces Danish coach Jess Thorup, who left by mutual consent after a disappointing campaign in which Ahly ended the season without a major trophy.
The 56-year-old arrives with an impressive résumé across club and international football. He previously guided Wydad Casablanca to the CAF Champions League title in 2017—ironically defeating Ahly in the final—while also securing the Moroccan league crown in the same year.
His continental success also includes the CAF Confederation Cup triumph with FUS Rabat, alongside domestic honours during his spell with Qatar’s Al Sadd.
On the international stage, Ammouta led Morocco’s home-based national team to African Nations Championship glory and later took Jordan to the final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, underlining his reputation as a tournament specialist.
His most recent role came with UAE side Al Jazira in 2024, where he departed after a run of inconsistent results.
Ahly will be hoping his experience and winning pedigree can restore silverware to the club as they prepare for the new season.
