Al Ahly’s management is reportedly eager to sign an Egyptian player despite objections from head coach Jose Riveiro.
Since taking charge in May after leaving Orlando Pirates, the Spanish coach has been assembling his squad for the 2025/26 season.
Riveiro has overseen three official matches so far, including the team’s campaign at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where the Red Devils were unable to advance past the group stage.
Riveiro has already strengthened the squad with the addition of Zamalek star Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed ahead of the new season.
However, tensions have surfaced between the coach and club officials over the proposed signing of Pharco FC defender Yassin Marei.
The 23-year-old Marei, a former Zamalek academy graduate, is seen by the club’s hierarchy as a promising long-term prospect.
Reports suggest the deal is nearing completion despite Riveiro’s reservations, as he reportedly considers Marei an average player who does not meet Al Ahly’s demanding standards.
Upon his arrival and before the team’s trip to the United States, Riveiro emphasized his preference for a lean squad, signing only players who fit his tactical approach.
This disagreement sheds light on the challenges of managing Al Ahly, where expectations run high and club management often exerts significant influence on transfer decisions.
