Al Ahly pushes to reverse league withdrawal

Al Ahly is desperately trying to reverse its decision to withdraw from the Egyptian Premier League in the face of a wave of consequences.

The club’s dramatic exit came after refusing to play Zamalek on March 11, but now a growing wave of support within Al Ahly is pushing to rejoin the competition.

The Olympic Committee had backed the initial ruling, slapping Al Ahly with a 3-0 loss and a three-point deduction at season’s end, all while demanding foreign referees for the clash.

Club president Mahmoud Al-Khatib, fresh off performing Umrah in Saudi Arabia, will land back in Egypt on Saturday. He’s set to meet with Al Ahly’s legal team and board to hammer out the club’s next move.

“There is a 90% chance that Al-Ahly will complete the competition, especially since most board members are inclined towards this, given the dire consequences that the club could face if it withdraws, most notably relegation to the fourth division,” an insider told Kooora.

“Mahmoud Al-Khatib is currently trying to contain the situation, but the final decision will be to resume the league,” the insider added.
