Al-Ahly pushes for reform in refereeing after VAR audio leak incident
Al-Ahly has intensified calls for change in Egypt’s football refereeing system following the leak of audio discussions from the video assistant referee (VAR) room during a recent match between Zamalek and National Bank in the Egyptian Premier League.
This leak has sparked a fresh wave of controversy and led Al-Ahly to demand immediate action from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA).
According to sources close to the club, Al-Ahly’s management is considering several strategic moves to address what they see as a longstanding issue of unfairness in officiating.
The club’s objective is to promote transparency and ensure fair play for all teams, free from perceived biases.
On Wednesday, Al-Ahly reiterated its call for the EFA to hire an experienced foreign expert to lead Egypt’s refereeing system, stating that such an individual would need the necessary support and autonomy to restore credibility and fairness within the league.
The EFA, responding to the incident, has pledged to investigate the VAR audio leak, with results expected to be shared publicly.
The federation has also hinted that, if the leak is confirmed, disciplinary measures could include the replacement of the current refereeing committee.
Additionally, Al-Ahly has called on the EFA to allow clubs access to audio from the VAR room during controversial decisions.
The club argues that this transparency would foster trust in the refereeing process and ensure that match outcomes are not unduly influenced by behind-the-scenes decisions.
The leaked audio incident has sparked an intense debate among fans and officials, with many seeing Al-Ahly’s demands as a critical step toward addressing ongoing concerns over officiating integrity and fairness within Egyptian football.
