Al Ahly is demanding the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirm the appointment of a foreign officiating crew for Tuesday’s highly anticipated derby against Zamalek at Cairo International Stadium.
The club officially submitted its request on Monday, urging the EFA to ensure a fair competitive environment as the Egyptian Premier League coronation group kicks off.
Despite Al Ahly’s appeal, the federation is leaning toward assigning Egyptian referee Mahmoud Bassiouni to oversee the match, citing the absence of formal notifications from either club requesting a foreign referee.
In its statement, Al Ahly insisted that the EFA and the Clubs Association take full responsibility for ensuring the integrity of the league.
“The information received to the club from the concerned parties indicates that the Clubs Association informs the Football Association, to bear all the costs to bring foreign referees, especially since the club raised dozens of notes to the Football Association before, demanding the development of the arbitration system and stopping the crude arbitration errors that affect the results of the matches without success.”
With 39 points, Al Ahly trails league leaders by seven points, while Zamalek sits third, setting the stage for a heated encounter.
