Several Al Ahly players chose not to bid farewell to their recently dismissed coach, Marcel Koller, after the club parted ways with him on Saturday evening.
This came after the team was knocked out of the CAF Champions League semifinals by South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
The club released an official statement thanking Koller for his service, following their disappointing exit from the prestigious competition.
However, several prominent players from Al Ahly, including Mohamed Magdy “Afsha,” Hussein El Shahat, goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, Omar Kamal, and Moroccan Ashraf Bencharki, did not share farewell messages to Koller on their social media platforms.
In the lead-up to his dismissal, Koller’s relationship with several players had become tense, primarily due to his decision not to consistently include them in the starting lineup.
This lack of opportunities for some of the squad members may have contributed to their decision to refrain from acknowledging the coach’s departure.
On the other hand, several Al Ahly players did take to social media to express their gratitude towards the Swiss coach.
Defender Rami Rabia posted a message saying, “Thank you, coach, and I wish you the best of luck,” while goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier thanked Koller for the opportunity to work under his guidance.
Imam Ashour also thanked Koller, acknowledging the coach’s role in pushing him to improve and for the continued trust placed in him.
Akram Tawfik also expressed his appreciation for the support Koller provided, as did Wissam Abu Ali, who shared his thanks for the coach’s contributions since his arrival at the club.
Additionally, Mustafa Al Ash, Karim Al Dabis, Mohamed Hany, and Marwan Attiya posted heartfelt farewells, showing their gratitude for the time they spent under Koller’s leadership.
