A board member of Al-Ahly SC, Mohamed Serag El-Din, has addressed swirling rumours linking Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo with a move to the Egyptian club ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Recent reports suggested that Al-Ahly are in talks with Ronaldo following the expiration of his contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr.
However, speaking in a televised interview, Serag acknowledged that discussions may be taking place, but said he had no concrete details to confirm Ronaldo’s potential involvement.
“All I can say is that if we were to sign a global star, it would be Mohamed Salah, the legend of Egyptian and Arab football and the star of Liverpool,” he said.
Shifting focus to domestic football, Serag downplayed the long-term ambitions of Pyramids FC, asserting that they cannot match the legacy of Zamalek SC.
“Pyramids’ recent results don’t elevate them to the stature of Zamalek, which has a storied history and a massive fan base,” he said.
Serag also responded to questions about Al-Ahly’s financial resources, emphasizing transparency.
“It’s no secret. There’s a budget announced to the General Assembly and the oversight bodies. Al-Ahly participates in international and global tournaments, and the club has numerous income streams from sponsorship and advertising rights.”
Meanwhile, Al Ahly have been paired with FC, Inter Miami and Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras in Group A.
