Al Ahly capable of qualifying for Round of 16 of FIFA Club World Cup – Mohamed Barakat

Former Al Ahly star Mohamed Barakat believes the Red Devils have what it takes to advance past the first round of next summer’s Club World Cup.

The Egyptian powerhouse has been drawn into Group A, where they will face tough competition from Inter Miami, Palmeiras, and Porto.

Speaking on the Red Castle podcast, Barakat expressed confidence in the team’s strength, highlighting the anticipated return of Mahmoud Hassan (Trezeguet) and Hamdi Fathy, along with Aliou Dieng rejoining on loan for the tournament.

“Al Ahly has a strong team and Mahmoud Hassan (Trezeguet) and Hamdi Fathy will be added to it with the return of Aliou Dieng on loan in the World Cup, and I think they can qualify for the round of 16 initially.”

Barakat also reaffirmed Al Ahly’s status as the frontrunner for the African Champions League title.

While acknowledging the challenge posed by Sudanese side Al-Hilal in the quarter-finals, he believes the Red Devils have the edge due to the quality gap between the two teams.

Discussing Al Ahly’s winter signings, Barakat was full of praise, particularly for Ashraf Ben Sharqi, whom he described as a game-changing talent.

The former midfielder also reflected on his own career path, expressing satisfaction with his role as the manager of the Egyptian national team and supervisor of the Olympic squad.

However, he admitted that his stint on the Egyptian Football Association’s Board of Directors was not a fulfilling experience. “It affected my reputation, and I wouldn’t take on that role again,” he revealed.
