Mahmoud El Khatib, the influential chairman of Al Ahly’s board, has scrapped his original plans and will head back to Cairo next Saturday.
This comes on the heels of the Egyptian Olympic Committee’s firm backing of the Professional Clubs Association’s rulings. Originally, El Khatib, who is currently on Umrah, intended to travel straight to Abu Dhabi for a treatment program. But the committee’s decision prompted a detour home instead.
A club insider told Kooora that no emergency Al Ahly board meetings happened today, though phone calls buzzed among members before iftar. The chatter centered on what’s next, with all ears awaiting El Khatib’s arrival to settle Al Ahly’s stance on the Egyptian League’s resumption. The source hinted strongly that finishing the league as planned is the probable outcome.
The Egyptian Olympic Committee recently upheld the Professional Clubs Association’s call to declare Al Ahly the loser in their summit match against Zamalek, slapping them with a 3-0 defeat and a three-point deduction for pulling out of the March 11 showdown.
