Al Ahly has reacted to comments from Egypt’s Minister of Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, about backing the team for the 2025 Club World Cup.
Sobhi recently told the press that his ministry is fully behind Al Ahly as they carry Egypt’s flag in the tournament. He added that he’d consulted with the Egyptian national team’s technical staff, under Hossam Hassan, to sync up with the club’s preparations.
An Al Ahly insider, speaking to Kooora, shed light on the situation. “The Red Castle received FIFA’s regulations for the Club World Cup, which stipulate that players from clubs participating in the tournament are exempt from joining their national teams during the international agenda period next June.”
The source also noted that a recent workshop during Ramadan, attended by representatives of all World Cup clubs, reinforced this rule—no national team duties for club players in June.
Al Ahly is set to compete in the revamped Club World Cup’s debut, a quadrennial event featuring 32 teams. They are drawn in Group A alongside Inter Miami, Palmeiras, and Porto.
