Al Ahli consider move for Villarreal and Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye
Al Ahli have identified Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye as a possible transfer target, with the Saudi Pro League club monitoring the Senegal international during the current transfer window.
Gueye, who was recently named the best player at the Africa Cup of Nations, has reportedly attracted the attention of Al Ahli after establishing himself as an important figure in Villarreal’s midfield. According to L’Equipe, the Saudi club has added the 26-year-old to its list of potential recruits.
The interest gives Gueye another possible destination after Everton were linked with a move for him in recent weeks. His performances in Villarreal’s midfield are understood to have persuaded Al Ahli to examine the possibility of signing the former Olympique de Marseille player.
Gueye joined Villarreal in July 2024 and remains under contract with the Spanish club until 30 June 2028. That long-term agreement puts Villarreal in a strong negotiating position should Al Ahli make a formal approach.
Transfermarkt currently estimates Gueye’s market value at 40m euros, a figure that could provide a reference point in any discussions between the clubs. However, there has been no confirmation that Al Ahli have made an official offer for the midfielder.
Africafoot has reported that Gueye has already agreed personal terms with the Saudi club. Al Ahli’s priority for a possible contract extension remains Franck Kessie, though, meaning the club’s plans for Gueye have yet to become fully clear.
The Senegal midfielder’s situation could therefore develop further as the transfer window continues. Al Ahli must decide whether to turn their interest into a concrete bid and attempt to bring Gueye to the Saudi Pro League.
Gueye currently earns an annual salary of 1,880,000 euros, equivalent to 1,222,000,000 CFA francs, in Spain.
Villarreal are preparing for their opening La Liga fixture against Racing Santander. Betting odds published by 1xBet list Villarreal at 2.15 to win, with a draw priced at 3.55 and a Racing Santander victory at 3.25.
Gueye’s possible move would add to the growing number of high-profile African players attracting attention from clubs in Saudi Arabia. For now, Villarreal retain control of the midfielder’s future because of his contract, while Al Ahli continue to weigh up whether to pursue the interest that has emerged around the Senegal international.
