Ajax forward Chuba Akpom remains determined to don the green and white of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, holding onto hope for an international debut despite years of waiting.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Akpom has long set his sights on representing Nigeria at the senior level. Since announcing his decision to switch allegiance in 2019, he has been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to make his mark on the international stage.
Akpom, who previously featured for England’s youth teams across various age groups—including the U16, U17, U19, and U21 levels—made his intentions clear in September 2019 when he declared his desire to play for Nigeria.
Speaking to BBC Sport, the 29-year-old forward explained the motivation behind his choice.
“It was a personal decision. I’m Nigerian, and my whole family feel very Nigerian, and it will be nice to represent Nigeria,” he said.
However, despite his commitment to the switch, Akpom has yet to receive a call-up to the Super Eagles, with other attacking options consistently preferred.
Even so, his ambition to represent Nigeria remains unwavering as he continues to chase his international dream.
