Ajax prodigy Abdellah Ouazane moves closer to Morocco senior call-up
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi is expected to travel to the Netherlands to watch Ajax teenager Abdellah Ouazane after receiving encouraging reports about the 17-year-old midfielder.
Ouazane has made an impressive start to the 2026-27 campaign, building on the limited first-team opportunity he was given by Ajax last season. His senior debut came in the Dutch Cup, when he played 26 minutes in a 7-2 defeat by Excelsior Maassluis on 17 December.
The Morocco Under-17 international has now begun to make a greater impact at professional level. Last Sunday, he scored his first senior goal in the league, producing a moment of individual quality to open his account for Ajax.
Receiving the ball on the left with his back to goal, Ouazane beat two opponents before turning to face forward. From the edge of the penalty area, the reigning Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations champion curled a shot into the top corner of the Heerenveen goal to put Ajax ahead in a 2-2 draw.
That goal came three weeks after he registered his first professional assist in the Conference League play-offs. Ouazane supplied the final pass during Ajax’s 4-1 victory away to Vojvodina on 23 July, further strengthening his case for a more prominent role.
According to Moroccan newspaper Al-Ahdath Al-Maghribia, Ouahbi has received positive feedback about the player, who was named the most valuable player at the most recent Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations.
Those reports have reportedly led the Morocco coach to include Ouazane in his preliminary selection for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which begins in September.
Ouahbi is now understood to want to assess the teenager personally. Specialist account FRMF Xtra reports that he is likely to travel to the Netherlands in the near future to watch Ouazane in action.
The visit could prove significant for the Ajax prospect. If he impresses Ouahbi, Ouazane could earn a place in the final Morocco squad for the opening qualification matches.
For now, the teenager’s progress is being monitored closely after a series of encouraging performances at a club where he was previously restricted to a brief appearance in the Dutch Cup. His goal against Heerenveen and assist against Vojvodina have given him a platform at the beginning of the new season.
Ouazane’s immediate challenge is to maintain that momentum and convince the Morocco coach that he is ready to step up to the international stage. The final decision will come after Ouahbi has seen him for himself in the Netherlands.
